They are not the enemy, they are the mission field. God is doing an amazing work among the Muslims.
Mohamed was a radical. In fact he could be the poster child for radical Muslims. He trained in Saudi Arabia and joined the Mujadem. He fought in three different countries against the Israelis, other Muslim groups he hated and anyone from the West. At one time he was on a suicide bombing mission in Israel, but the bomb would not detonate. But that is another story.
After that bombing mission he returned home, studied Islam and became a teacher at a Madris (a school for Islamic studies for children). Mohamed was in charge of multiple Mosques and a respected leader. Due to his violent background he was a perfect weapon for persecuting Christians. When called upon, he burned down churches and frequently beat and arrested Christians.
On one such evening of violence he was beating a Christian and the man told him that Jesus loved him and in fact Jesus died for him. Mohamed found this disturbing. He went to another Imam and asked him about what this Christian had said. The Imam told him this was a trick of the devil to confuse Mohamed. He was not convinced. Why would the devil want him to know that Gods own Son, loved him, and died for him? How could this man tell him of God’s love, while being beaten? The Christian did not seem to even be angry at Mohamed. In his life, it was all about hate and violence. How could the Christian love Mohamed?
Mohamed had grown to struggle with some of the Islamic teachings. Mohamed dearly loved his mother. But he was taught only one woman in 10,000 would go to paradise. Why did Allah hate women so bad he would send them to hell? Would Allah send his mother to hell? He had no assurance of paradise and was tormented with the violence and hate that filled his life. Mohamed was a loyal follower on the outside, but a troubled human on the inside.
In the next year one of his own students asked to meet with him and shared with him how he came to Jesus. Mohamed asked him, “why he became a Christian?” The young man shared that he now had the assurance that God loved him and that he would spend eternity in heaven. Mohamed was haunted in his insecurity of paradise, even as he tried to earn Allah’s’ favor. He asked how he could become a Christian. The boy took him to a missionary and Mohamed believed in Jesus, repented and was baptized.
One of Mohamed’s former mentors came to him after Mohamed became a Christian. He told him of a dream where Jesus appeared to him and told him to come to Him. Mohamed told his friend, we’ll call Ibrahim, that Jesus was calling him. The friend left unconvinced, but returned weeks later to report another dream. For some reason, Mohamed told Ibrahim, that this was his last chance and that Jesus would not appear again. If he refused this time Ibrahim would be lost forever. So Ibrahim, a teacher, over 277 mosques surrendered to Jesus.
Both men lost everything they had, were disowned by their families but escaped with their lives. Mohamed was later poisoned, beaten and left in a comma. Ibrahim, was offered a fortune to return to Islam, but fled instead. Mohamed now is the key contact in working with the new Christians just coming from Islam. I met him about a year ago. He has led many to Christ. He tried open air evangelism and was beaten and hunted. He then turned to one-on-one evangelism.
We now have seven house churches in an area inhabited by refugees from, Somalia, Eretria, Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya. After the internment types of processing they are resettled here. It is a step up from the slums and even has electricity and some running water. We have Christians living 6-11 in rooms as small as 10×15. We teach them to share their faith as they grow in their faith. Many will be resettled in other countries. Most can’t go home and have asylum status with the UN.
God is gathering Himself a people from the nations of Islam. He is doing a mighty work. These men’s testimony is repeated over and over again every day. The persecuted are choosing to love their persecutors. Muslims are dreaming of a Savior. The Kingdom of God expanding!
